Heart of the House: Gratitude

Heart of the House: Gratitude

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for” – Zig Ziglar

I have never stopped being grateful for my life, my very breath and all God has privileged me with. I believe the more grateful you are, the more present you become. Every night at Destiny Haven, we sit together and share three things we are grateful for. The whole process takes about 10 minutes or more, as we often laugh together as we share anecdotes from the day.

Lewis and I learnt this process 27 years ago during our own recovery journey, and we’ve done it ever since. We possibly weren’t aware back then that gratitude literally rewires your brain. Even a simple gratitude practice daily builds lasting neural sensitivity for more positive thinking. That means the more you practice gratitude, the more you will default to positivity instead of negativity. Study after study shows that simple gratitude exercises, like sharing daily “thankfuls”, or keeping a gratitude diary with friends and family, can make you happier, more positive, and more emotionally open even after just a few weeks. These benefits are long-lasting, which leads to an overall increase in well-being and increased resilience to stress.

We have seen over and over in our lives that a grateful heart is a magnet for miracles. Learning to be grateful for what you have, attracts more. When you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never have enough. As I tell the precious Diamonds every day, gratitude and attitude are choices that determine the altitude of our lives.
