Resilience

“The human capacity for burden is like bamboo – far more flexible than you’d ever believe at first glance” – Jodie Piccoult

Elizabeth Edwards states, “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it’s different than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you’ve lost, or you can accept it and try to put together something that is great”. All of humanity has entered a season where, although everything feels strange and scary, it’s also a rare opportunity for us all to reflect and discover who we are without the usual routines. For some of us, life has become more intense – especially for those on the frontlines. Others of us don’t know who we are without constant action, yet, we find ourselves forced into staying in one place, often isolated from loved ones. For some, there are opportunities or creativity we’ve waited forever to explore and now we have the time to discover. We are all having to lean into new ways to live, think, feel and be. And maybe in the challenge, there is also a gift. We have to find ways of looking after our minds, bodies and emotions, and manage our finances in this global crisis. I pray that through it all we don’t become so gripped by fear that our lives are crippled by smallness; that we can come to more deeply know that we are all united in this terrible mess. May we stun ourselves as we discover how brilliantly creative we are, and how resilient the human spirit is. May we through it all, know that God has not abandoned us; that His love is constant and ever pursuing the human heart. I’m grateful that our Diamonds are very shielded from the media frenzy every day played out on TVs and in Newspapers. We are safe and trying to ensure life here goes on as usual. As humans united through this tragedy, we all have to find ways to be patient and get to the end. None of this will be easy but we can all emerge stronger with stories of resilience and courage to share for years to come.
